Marine Photobank Research Specialist
THE MARINE PHOTOBANK OVERVIEW:
The Marine Photobank, a project of SeaWeb, is a unique resource that links a growing pool of conservation-minded photographers with a global network of journalists, researchers, educators and conservationists who work to highlight the pressing issues facing our ocean. Their images are used in news stories as well as outreach campaigns that protect coral reefs, engage fishermen in more sustainable fishing practices, teach coastal communities how to better manage their fisheries, promote the reduction of toxic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and engage the public as a whole in ocean conservation.
WHAT WE DO:
- We foster a network hub of photographers and messengers. We facilitate exchange between these entities, nurturing partnerships that effectively engage target audiences.
- We collect and provide a free resource of ocean conservation imagery. We actively collect and maintain a diverse array of conservation-themed images that are used for non-commercial conservation purposes to tell a story about our ocean.
- We supplement images with scientific data and resources. As scientists, we work to ensure accuracy and a high level of information about each of our images to help our members understand current ocean issues.
- We produce enriching Educational Materials. We employ our collection to create engaging photo stories that enable the viewer to gain a deeper understanding of ocean issues. These are distributed to members, targeted audiences and the public.
- We engage the media. Through a special program, we enable journalists, editors and news outlets such as BBC and MSNBC to use images under special terms.
SEAWEB OVERVIEW:
SeaWeb is a communications-based nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that uses social marketing to advance ocean conservation.
