Dr. Georg Heiss
Dr. Georg Heiss is project manager and researcher at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (www.naturkundemuseum-berlin.de) and director of Reef Check Germany (www.reefcheck.de). Georg is also a consultant in project development and training in coral reef monitoring and management. He studied Geology in Heidelberg, received his PhD at the University Kiel and held postdoc positions at GEOMAR Kiel and at C.N.R.S. in Gif-sur-Yvette and Aix-en-Provence. He worked at the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology Bremen and as independent consultant. His main interests are coral reef paleoclimatology, human impacts on coral reefs, reef monitoring and conservation and public outreach programs.
Past activities include co-ordination of the International Year of the Reef – IYOR in Germany, international research programs (e.g. Chinese-German cooperation in Marine Sciences, Indonesian-German program for co-operation in Marine Sciences and Geosciences, EU research projects in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea). Georg’s scientific background is carbonate geology, specializing in coral reef sedimentology with strong integrative and interdisciplinary approach. Georg has extensive field work experience both land- and ship-based in the Red Sea, the Western Indian Ocean, the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and the Caribbean reefs off Panama.
