Marcia Moreno-Baez

Marcia is originally from Guaymas, on the Sonoran coast in México. Coming from the Gulf of California ecoregion, she has had the opportunity to work in different organizations focused on natural resources management and conservation and the interaction between man and the sea. Marcia’s research interests center on the human dimensions of natural resources. During her work in a project called PANGAS, she developed a keen interest in working on the social aspects of natural resources management. Throughout these years, she has collaborated with researchers using social sciences to understand small-scale fisheries; and institutional, social networks and spatial analysis, to understand the human dimensions of natural resources. She has also collaborated with scientists giving support for monitoring programs for biodiversity through the use of geospatial technology. Today, Marcia’s research has been transformed into an interdisciplinary career focused mostly on the use of geospatial technology to access and analyze natural system data - fisheries - working with researchers, users and decision makers.

Taking advantage of the interaction with people and the ocean, Marcia tries to capture those images that show fishers silently preparing their nets or the colors filling the sky and reflecting across the calm waters of the Gulf. "I can say that some of the implications on having interaction at different levels are to incorporate those moments into an image but also fishers’ knowledge and needs in our society."
