The Destructive Trails of Trawlers
Mike Markovina/Marine Photobank
Trawler fishing vessels catch fish by dragging enormous nets along the seafloor, sweeping up everything in their path. This process can greatly damage marine ecosystems. Not only does trawling produce massive quantities of bycatch, the incidental catch of non-targeted animals, but it also causes long-term damage to life on the seafloor and reefs.
