Precarious Journey
Loggerhead turtle hatchling heads for the ocean
Lisa Morse/Marine Photobank
From the moment they hatch, loggerhead sea turtles face enormous challenges. Of the small percentage that successfully make their way from the beach to the ocean, even fewer are able to avoid predation in the open ocean. And as juveniles and adults they face the constant threat of injury or death in fishing gear. From 1990 to 2008, an estimated 850,000 sea turtles were caught as bycatch around the world.
