Steller sea lion numbers in the western Aleutian Islands have fallen by more than 40 percent from 2000 to 2008, during which time fishing in the area has increased. In order to reverse the species decline in this region, scientists with the National Marine Fisheries Service are advocating for closures of some of the area's fisheries by January 2011. The recommended closures would occur in the western and central Aleutian Islands, and would target mainly Pacific cod and Atka mackerel, species on which local Stellar sea lions depend for food.
