Rare Sockeye Windfall in British Columbia

This summer, British Columbia's Fraser River has experienced the largest return of sockeye salmon to the area in nearly a century. An estimated 34.5 million sockeye have returned to the river from the sea to spawn, much to the surprise and bewilderment of fisheries scientists. This year's sockeye return comes in the wake of declining returns in the past 20 years and dwarfs the estimated 1.5 million sockeye return in the Fraser River last year. While Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans responded to the bounty by opening fisheries and increasing allowable catches, it has received criticism for not predicting the enormous return and opening fisheries earlier.
