Ocean Life Unveiled

Nearly 250,000 marine species, excluding microbes, have now been estimated to exist, according to the recently released First Census of Marine Life, which catalogued the diversity, distribution and abundance of life in the ocean. It was one of the largest scientific collaborations in history. While much about the world beneath the ocean’s surface remains a mystery, understanding of marine environments have been buoyed by the findings of the decade-long project. This photo of several remoras hitching a ride on a sea turtle illustrates one of the many relationships between species in ocean ecosystems.
