Drowned
Albatross drowned on longline
Projeto Tamar Brazil/Marine Photobank

This image of an albatross hooked and drowned by a pelagic longline received a runner-up prize for SeaWeb's Marine Photobank and Project AWARE Foundation third annual Ocean in Focus conservation photography contest. The contest judges recognized the image for its potential impact to increase awareness of the environmental effects of longlining. This fishing method incidentally catches various species as bycatch, including sharks, sea turtles and seabirds. Of the 22 species of albatrosses recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 17 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered.
