Slicks and Silkies
Oil Rig and Silky Sharks in Gulf of Mexico
Jake Levenson/Marine Photobank

This photo juxtaposing marine life and human use of the ocean (silky sharks circling near an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico) received a runner-up prize for SeaWeb's Marine Photobank and Project AWARE Foundation third annual Ocean in Focus Conservation Photo Contest. The potentially catastrophic impacts of offshore oil drilling were once again brought to the fore after the April 20, 2010, blowout of the Deepwater Horizon well spilled millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
