This photo of a local fisherman preparing his longline hooks used for catching dorado off the coast of Ecuador received a runner-up prize for SeaWeb's Marine Photobank and Project AWARE Foundation third annual Ocean in Focus Conservation Photo Contest. The photographer, Maximilian Hirschfeld, captured the image while visiting fishery ports as part of an international marine ecology research program with the University of San Francisco de Quito. “The bycatch rate of [longline fishing] is vast,” Hirschfeld said. “I interviewed the fishermen about the fish they are targeting, their perception on declining abundances of commercial fish and potential bycatch while taking the picture of them preparing the numerous rusty hooks on their small wooden vessel. Understanding the values and the dynamics of local fisheries is crucial to advance the conservation of species throughout the world.”
