2010 International Year of Biodiversity
Year of Biodiversity
ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies/Marine Photobank
The United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity. Tropical coral reefs, like this one in Papua New Guinea, are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, yet they are under increasing pressure from human activities. Scientists are working to determine how biodiversity affects the ability of ecosystems and therefore species, including humans, to recover from disturbances to their environment such as coral bleaching, ocean acidification and global climate change and how such species might adapt in the coming decades.
