Dr. Shuman is the Director of Reef Check California Program with expertise in marine ecology and wetland restoration. Born and raised in southern California, Dr. Shuman received a Bachelors degree in Environmental Science and a Masters degree in biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Shuman continued his education at UCLA where he received a doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering. Dr. Shuman’s academic research focused on a variety of topics including wetland restoration monitoring in Southern California, the evaluation of US EPA bioassay protocols, and the ecological impacts of the marine aquarium trade in Southeast Asia with an emphasis on sustainable management. Following extensive field research on coral reefs in numerous countries throughout the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, Dr. Shuman took a position at Heal the Bay in Santa Monica, California to administer the design of the Malibu Lagoon Restoration and Enhancement Plan and work on power plant impingement and entrainment issues. Dr. Shuman is currently directing the Reef Check California Program which is an initiative to design and implement a volunteer subtidal rocky reef monitoring program in California.

Dr. Shuman has contributed images from his research expedition to West Sumatra two months after the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit this region on December 26, 2004. He continues to contribute images that highlight the issues and impacts to California’s ecosystem.
